Symptoms

Does your cut need stitches?

A cut usually needs to be closed if it gapes open, is deeper than a quarter inch or is on the face, hands or a joint. The sooner it is closed, the better it heals and the lower the risk of infection.

This needs an in person exam, so please visit one of our clinics. No appointment is necessary.

  • Cut is deep or longer than half an inch

FAQs

Questions about stitches and cuts care

Still unsure? Call (813) 717-SICK and our team will help.

How soon do I need stitches?

As soon as possible, ideally within a few hours of the injury. Waiting raises the risk of infection and scarring.

What is the difference between stitches and skin glue?

Skin glue works well for small, clean cuts in low tension areas. Stitches are better for deeper or longer cuts and areas that move a lot. Your doctor will choose what heals best.

When do stitches come out?

Usually in 5 to 14 days, depending on where the cut is. Stitches on the face come out sooner than those on a knee or hand.
