Symptoms

Who should think about PrEP?

PrEP is for anyone who does not have HIV and could be exposed through sex or sharing needles. That includes people whose partner has HIV, people who do not always use condoms and people recently treated for another STD.

This needs an in person exam, so please visit one of our clinics. No appointment is necessary.

  • Your partner has HIV
  • You don't always use condoms
  • You've had an STD in the last six months
  • You have more than one partner
  • You share needles or other drug equipment
  • You want extra protection and peace of mind

Your visit

What happens at your visit?

You see a doctor face to face, usually the same day you walk in. Here is what to expect.

  • A private talk about your health and risk
  • An HIV test and lab work before you start
  • A prescription sent to your pharmacy
  • Follow up testing every three months while on PrEP

Go to the ER or call 911 if you have:

  • A possible HIV exposure in the last 72 hours: ask about PEP right away
  • Fever, rash and swollen glands soon after an exposure
  • Severe allergic reaction to a new medicine

FAQs

Questions about prep care

Still unsure? Call (813) 717-SICK and our team will help.

How well does PrEP work?

When taken as prescribed, PrEP lowers the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 99 percent. It does not protect against other STDs, so condoms still matter.

Does insurance cover PrEP?

Most insurance plans cover PrEP, including the visits and lab tests. Call (813) 717-SICK and we will help you check your coverage.

What is the difference between PrEP and PEP?

PrEP is taken before a possible exposure to prevent HIV. PEP is emergency medicine started within 72 hours after a possible exposure.
